We got together with a bunch of parents, and we came up with this standard ... children should be cheerful, cooperative, and self-reliant. Parents should be cheerful, worry-free, and confident, and parents should be their own best advisors. 

We threw away all the things that don't contribute to these ends. We were left with a series of skills that parents can use to meet these goals. Then we put these skills in order, so those that are essential for later skills, came first.
